Urban Decay x Jean-Michel Basquiat: a spring makeup collab with artistic inspirations

05 May 2017 / 03:05 H.

AMERICAN beauty brand Urban Decay has joined forces with the Jean-Michel Basquiat Foundation for a makeup collection inspired by the artist's work and the colours he used. From the packaging to the shades to the product names, everything in this collaboration is inspired by and pays homage to the Neo-Expressionist artist.
Colour is central to the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat, considered one of the most influential artists of the 20 century both for his graffiti pieces and his avant-garde paintings. Now, the artist's work has inspired cosmetics brand Urban Decay for its new makeup line.
"Like Urban Decay, Jean-Michel Basquiat was an outsider who challenged the status quo and used colour in nontraditional ways. From his informal graffiti work and the way he mixed mediums and colours to the way he spoke out against social injustice, it's hard to imagine a more perfect fit for our brand" explains Urban Decay in a news release.

Bright and electric colors
The Urban Decay x Jean-Michel Basquiat collection features two eyeshadow palettes: "Gold Griot," a selection of matte and shimmering nudes, and "Tenant," with colours including striking shades of bright pink, black, turquoise and a frosty green. The palettes bring beauty fans 16 new and exclusive eyeshadow shades with a Pigment Infusion System formulation to ensure long-lasting colour.
A third palette, called "Gallery," features four powders for the face, including two blushes (mid pink and berry shades), a bronzing powder and a highlighter. Note that each of the collection's palettes features a slit around the back allowing it to be hung on a wall like an artwork.
The collection includes three bright, glossy shades of Vice Lipsticks with a pink-purple, a nude taupe and a sienna shade, and three vivid shades of 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil, a fluorescent yellow/green, a sienna and a turquoise. All products in the collection have packaging inspired by the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat. — AFP Relaxnews
