Ranting DJ charged with DUI

KUALA LUMPUR: A freelance night club DJ who was seen ranting against the police in a video clip was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol at a magistrate's court today.
Ooi Kok Wei, 31, who claimed trial to the charge under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 faces a fine of between RM1,000 and RM6,000 or a maximum 12 months' prison term.
He was accused of having 84mg of alcohol content in 100ml of blood, which is 4mg more than the permissible content.
Ooi caused a stir when he was escorted into court by policemen, as many in the public gallery and in the dock recognised him from the viral video clip.
He is alleged to have committed the offence at Jalan Sungai Besi at about 3.45am on May 6.
Prosecuting officer Inspector Hashimah Hashim urged the court to impose bail of RM4,000 in one surety.
Ooi's counsel Mohamed Nizam Mohamed Fazil who requested a reasonable amount, said his client is a freelance deejay and dancer who had represented Malaysia in many international competitions.

A one-minute-and-43-second video clip had emerged on social media depicting a man, suspected of being intoxicated, behaving in a hostile manner towards a police officer who had asked him to take a breathalyser test.
The man is seen in the passenger seat of a car driven by a traffic policeman and is heard saying that the police had pulled him over and asked him if he had been drinking and he said he responded by saying that he is a DJ at a club, but he did not drink.
