KAJANG: Four robbers armed with sledgehammers and a handgun escaped with over RM200,000 worth in gems after striking a goldsmith store in a hypermarket in Sungei Chua here on Saturday.
It was the second time the goldsmith store was hit by robbers since 2013.
In the midst of a crowd of shoppers at the Giant hypermarket in Taman Kajang Mewah, the robbers who wore helmets with visors barged into the jewellery store at about 1.30pm before holding up two female staff.
While one robber stood guard at the entrance, the others smashed the jewellery showcases and scooped the gold items.
Moments later, they fled the scene and escaped on two motorcycles.
Witnesses gave investigators the registration numbers of the motorcycles but it turned out to be fake.
Sources said police managed to lift fingerprints from the scene and efforts to trace the crooks are ongoing.
In a separate case in Subang Jaya early today, two young robbers aged 17 and 20 were caught red-handed by police patrolmen after they robbed a 24-hour convenience store on Jalan SS14/1 at about 6.30am.
The robbers who were armed with sharp objects had held up the staff of the store before robbing him of several hundred ringgit and bundling dozens of cigarette packets.
Sources said as they were taking off with the loot on a motorcycle, policemen on crime prevention rounds who were also on motorcycles spotted the suspects behaving suspiciously and gave chase before arresting them.
The policemen also found several hand tools on the suspects.
