GEORGE TOWN: Two traders claimed trial at the Magistrate's Court here with obstructing enforcement personnel from carrying out their duties.

Mohammad Haziq Ammar Mohd Hussain, 28, and Abdul Muhaimin Mohd Hassan, 34, were accused of committing the offence at a stall in front of the Bagan Jermal Fire & Rescue Department station at Jalan Tanjung Tokong at 8.30pm on May 4.

The two were charged with obstructing Penang Island City Council (MBPP) enforcement personnel from carrying out their duties by driving off an enforcement truck belonging to the Council.

The charge under the Penal Code carries a maximum two year jail term, or a fine of up to RM10,000 or both upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Nurul Fatin Hussain did not offer bail to both the accused.

Defence counsel M. Puveneswaran however requested for bail to be set at RM2,000 for each accused as both his clients only earned RM1,500 a month as traders.

He also urged the court to consider that Mohammad Hazia Ammar is married with a four-year-old daughter while Abdul Muhaimin has ageing parents to care for.

Magistrate Mohamad Amin then fixed bail at RM7,000 with one surety for each of the accused and set July 4 for mention.
