KUALA LUMPUR: Despite being the son of a police sergeant and police officer, a 21-year-old youth had supported terrorist activities and possessed items related to Islamic State (IS).
High Court judge Datuk Azman Abdullah, today jailed part-time air-conditioning service technician Ahmad Fariz Zulkefli to a total of seven years jail.
However, the accused will only serve five years in jail as the judge ordered Ahmad Faris to serve the sentence from the date of arrest on Aug 29, 2016.
"From the records, (it shows that) your parents are in the police but you criticised the police. Why? Don't you know that your parents are police?" asked Azman.
Azman ordered Ahmad Faris to serve five years jail for promoting terrorist activities through "WeChat" application, between June 9, 2016 and July 30, 2016.
He was jailed another two years for possessing items related to IS, which is a T-shirt with IS logo, photographs in his handphone and Apple iPad.
He is alleged to have committed the offence at 10.45am on Aug 29, 2016. Both the offences were committed at a house Keramat.
According to the facts of the case, the accused made comments about the police, army and the judges.
Lawyer Adi Zulkarnain Zulkafli said the accused was only 20 years old when he was arrested and that he is the youngest of four children.
He said Ahmad Faris' father was a police sergeant while his mother was a police officer, who had passed away five years, ago.
He said the accused knew IS through watching television and that he has no previous conviction.
"He regrets his act," said Adi.
"His comment was stupid and was done due to influence from his friends," said Adi.
Deputy public prosecutor Noor Syazwani Mohamad Sobry said the court must consider the seriousness of the case and asked the court to impose a deterrent sentence as a lesson for others.
