KUALA LUMPUR: A gang of four armed robbers who trailed a Chinese national and snatched RM40,000 from him were gunned down by police in a shootout next to the Malaysian National Institute of Translation (MNIT) in Section 10, Wangsa Maju past noon today.
The robbers who are believed to be locals and known as the "Civic Gang" as they moved around in a Honda Civic car had apparently pulled off several robberies here and in Selangor over the months.

Yesterday, the 32-year-old Chinese victim was fortunate as a team of detectives from Selangor police were passing the scene when they spotted the robbery and went to the foreigner's aid at 12.35pm.
Kuala Lumpur police CID chief SAC Rusdi Mohd Isa said the victim who is from Subang and runs a business here had earlier withdrawn RM40,000 from a bank in Seri Gombak before taking a drive in a ride-sharing GrabCar vehicle to the MNIT.
"The victim got off at the MNIT as he had some translation work he wanted done with the institute. As he walked towards the building, two of the robbers who were armed with machetes approached him and snatched his bag containing the cash before fleeing towards their getaway car – a Honda Civic.
The victim fell as a result and injured an arm." he said.
Rusdi said a team of police detectives who were passing the scene rushed out of their vehicle and intercepted the Civic.
He said the detectives ordered the suspects to surrender but gunshots rang out of the Civic.
He said the policemen took cover and in an ensuing shootout, all four robbers were killed.
Rusdi said the detectives recovered two handguns, two machetes and stolen cash from the dead robbers who are yet to be identified.
He said three of the robbers were found dead in the car while the body of a fourth robber was about 10m away from the vehicle.
Rusdi said the gang's targeted victims were those who withdrew large sums of cash from banks.
The robbers apparently trailed their victims before holding them up with firearms or machetes when they get off their vehicles.
Rusdi said checks showed the four dead suspects are Indonesians aged between 37 and 49.
He said one of the suspects was a Malaysian permanent residence (PR) status holder.
