(Video) Man holds woman hostage in Kota Kinabalu

KOTA KINABALU: A shirtless man took a woman hostage at knifepoint along Jalan Damai here today.
The incident lasted about two hours before it was defused by local police.
Videos of the incident circulated through social media and became viral.
According to the police, the man had taken the woman hostage from a house on Harrington Road near Luyang Restaurant and dragged her with the knife to her neck to the Jalan Damai area.
Police cordoned off the area while negotiators tried to reason with the man to release the woman.
One of the videos that had gone viral showed the man walking with her on a main road while negotiations were taking place. Another video showed that the man had gone with her into what looked like a petrol station nearby.
At around 9.20pm, the man was seen sitting on the road together with the woman. The woman had held what appeared to be a mobile phone in her hand.
The police swarmed in and overpowered the man at around 9.36pm.
The man was detained while the woman was seen to be given medical treatment by 9.45pm.
According to police, the suspect is a foreigner in his late 20s and was allegedly trying to break in to a house when he spotted a woman standing outside.
The man had walked with her for about 2km with the knife from the housing area to the main road.
Police say that the woman is in stable condition and suffered no external injuries. She has since been taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment.
