SHAH ALAM: Selangor police will conduct further investigations into gang robberies in the state following the fatal shoot-out between "Civic Gang" and police in Wangsa Maju.
In the incident yesterday, police shot four men believed to be members of the gang who robbed a Chinese national of RM40,000 as he was about to settle some business matters at the Institute of Translation and Books.
Selangor Police chief Commissioner Datuk Seri Abdul Samah Mat said there have been at least 30 similar cases in the state.
"Police believe that suspects of the same group are involved but we will need more time to investigate and prove it," he said after the hand-over ceremony between former Selangor Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department chief ACP Amran Ramli and the department's new head, ACP Amarjit Singh today.
He said many of the victims run their own businesses and would make large withdrawals of between RM30,000 and RM200,000.
"Once the suspects have identified the targets, they would wait for them to exit the bank before robbing the victims or corner them halfway to their destinations," he said.
In the incident in Wangsa Maju, the 32-year-old Chinese victim was fortunate as a team of detectives from Selangor police were passing by the scene when they spotted the robbery and went to the foreigner's aid at 12.35pm.
Kuala Lumpur police CID chief SAC Rusdi Mohd Isa said the same team then rushed out of their vehicle and intercepted the robbers.
He said the detectives ordered the suspects to surrender but they started shooting instead.
The policemen took cover and in an ensuing shootout, all four robbers were killed.
In a separate case, Abdul Samah said a task force has been set up to track down suspects in a restaurant robbery in Taman Melawati.
"We have some leads but I am not ready to make any announcement," he said.
Last Saturday, six men armed with machetes entered the eatery and robbed patrons and employees before fleeing with cash and valuables worth close to RM30,000.
