Special committee to be formed to crackdown on snatch thefts: DIGP

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have formed a special committee and will be launching an operation to crackdown on snatch thefts in the city.
Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Noor Rashid Ibrahim (pix) said city police will take drastic measures, including an integrated approach with Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) to flush out snatch theft crime.
"As we all know crime activities especially those involving snatch theft and viral videos about snatch theft is not a good image to the country.
"So we will use all our assets, namely Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) policemen and collaborate with Anti-Drug Agencies (AADK) in this operation. The operation will also focus on errant motorcyclists and drug addicts.
"A committee was formed and all the details on going hard towards crime activities like snatch theft were discussed with MCPF," he said after attending an anti-crime seminar organised by MCPF here today.
On May 11, Kuala Lumpur deputy police chief DCP Datuk Mazlan Lazim said snatch theft is on the rise in the federal capital with 368 cases reported so far this year.
He said the number indicated a drastic hike compared to 234 cases during the whole of last year.
He said police always endeavoured to reduce the snatch theft crime index but the public must also play their part by furnishing information to the police to enable them to act to solve cases.
Mazlan also suggested that the public used the Volunteer Smartphone Patrol (VSP) application to channel information and complaints on crimes taking place near them.
