Gerakan urges completion of Komtar overhead pedestrian bridge

GEORGE TOWN: A Gerakan coordinator today urged the Penang government not to delay anymore the upgrading of a four-legged Komtar overhead pedestrian bridge.
Padang Kota coordinator H'ng Khoon Leng wants the state to ensure there are no more delays as the upgrading work was supposed to be completed last year.
He said it has been two years since the project took off and questioned how long it will take to be completed.
"Will it takes three years or will take as much time as building the second Penang Bridge?" he asked during a press conference near the bridge in Komtar today.
Chief Minister Lim Guan had on Feb 4, 2015 announced that the pedestrian bridge will be upgraded with glass panels, escalators and lifts in the RM6 million project.
The works were scheduled to begin on Feb 5, 2015 and slated to take nine months to a year to be completed.
The four-legged over pedestrian bridge linking Komtar, Jalan Penang, Jalan Burma and Jalan Dr. Lim Chwee Leong, which is also known as the "Octopus Bridge", was built in 1993.
State Local Government exco Chow Kon Yeow, meanwhile, said this was a corporate social responsibility (CSR) project and the contractor has committed to finish the job by August.
He cited relocation of utilities and site conditions as reasons for the delay.
