PETALING JAYA: PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang has successfully undergone a valve replacement surgery for his heart condition at the National Heart Institute (IJN).
IJN in a statement said the three-hour surgery held on Tuesday morning was performed by a panel of doctors, one of whom is a senior consultant and cardiothoracic surgeon and IJN's chief executive officer Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Azhari Yakub.
Abdul Hadi is currently warded at IJN's Intensive Care Unit, where his condition will be observed for the next few days, according to a statement issued by IJN, which added that the next 48 hours would be a "crucial period".
"Doctors are happy that the procedure progressed as anticipated and his vital perimeters thus far are stable," read the statement, adding that Abdul Hadi could only receive restricted guests.
The statement also said Abdul Hadi had been having increasing symptoms due to a leaking heart valve, which had affected his daily activities.
"As such, doctors advised for a planned heart valve surgery," it added.
Abdul Hadi's political secretary Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar in a statement on Monday said the Islamist party will provide updates about the Marang MP's condition from time to time.
"PAS invites all members and supporters to pray for his health and for his treatment to proceed smoothly.
"Hadi's family and the party would like to thank the public for giving him some space to recuperate by not visiting him at the hospital for the time being," Samsuri said in a statement.
