KUALA LUMPUR: The project to build a poultry slaughterhouse at the Selayang wholesale market will proceed as planned despite protests from local residents and other parties, said Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor.
"We will continue with the project ... because it aims to supply clean and halal chicken to cater to the needs of people," he told reporters when commenting on protests against the project.
He also advised nearby residents who opposed the project to be open minded and to cooperate with the government to resolve any problems for the common good.
Recently, 60 non-governmental organisations (NGOs), including residents' associations, welfare homes and hawkers' associations protested against the project, and demanded it be transferred to another area due to concerns over traffic congestion and health of local residents.
Earlier, Tengku Adnan launched the ground-breaking ceremony and draw for the Federal Territory Affordable Housing (Rumawip) project, "Residensi Enesta Kepong" here, today. — Bernama
