32 affected as flash flood hits Cameron

CAMERON HIGHLANDS: A total 32 people including from families staying at the Ringlet police station barracks were affected by flash floods following a heavy 30 minute downpour here on Tuesday.
Three cars, a 4WD and motorcycle were also damaged after water levels at Sungai Ringlet overflowed and swept downhill about 5.30pm. The downfall which began about 5pm lasted almost two hours.
Twenty-four of the victims from 10 families were from Kampung Baru, while eight others were from three police families staying at the barracks located inside the compound of the Ringlet police station were yesterday seen clearing the debris with assistance from neighbours.
Seven houses and a clothing store at the village was also damaged by the water and mud. Most of the house were located near Sungai Ringlet which flows from Hulu Ringlet into the Sultan Abu Bakar Dam.
During the downpour, several people were forced to seek shelter in neighbouring homes after water levels rose to more than a metre and threatened to continue rising.
Cameron Highlands district police chief DSP Hasadid A. Hamid said the Ringlet police station was not affected while three barracks including the unit of the station head was damaged in the incident.
"The water level began to recede when rain stopped at 6.30pm and no casualties were reported," he added.
