KUALA LUMPUR: A snatch thief who was nabbed by the public after he attempted to grab a gold chain from an Indian tourist was given a harsh beating by bystanders before being handed over to police at Jalan Hang Lekiu here on Tuesday.
The suspect suffered bruises and swelling as a result of being set upon by an angry mob.
The 21-year-old Indian man was crossing a road at about 4pm when the 25-year-old suspect rode up on a motorcycle and tried to snatch the victim's gold chain.
However, the thief failed to get the chain as the victim held on to it tightly.
Dang Wangi police chief ACP Mohd Sukri Kaman said in a bid to escape, the suspect sped off on his motorcycle but lost control of the machine and crashed into a road divider.
He said the suspect tried to escape again on foot but was pursued by passers-by and apprehended before police took him into custody.
Mohd Sukri said checks showed the suspect had six previous criminal records.
A video captured by the public showing the suspect being confronted and assaulted made its rounds on social media today.
