ALOR STAR: Kuala Kedah Border Control Agency (AKSEM) seized 290,600 sticks of contraband cigarettes of various types, worth RM169,086, believed to be supplied for the local market.
Its deputy commander Noor Mohammed Shaik Alauddin said in the raid at a house in Taman Merpati at about 3pm yesterday, 1,367 cigarette cartons (273,400 sticks) were found inside the house and another 110 cartons (17,200 sticks) in a car belonging to a male local suspect, in his 30s.
"We believe the suspect, who also stayed in the house, obtained the supply of cigarettes from the south of the peninsula before being distributed on a small scale to retail shops in Alor Star and Kuala Kedah.
"Most of the seized cigarettes are new brands because they are being sold at a low price to attract more customers," he said at media conference here today.
The case is being investigated under Section 135 (1) (d) of the Customs Act 1967. — Bernama
