PETALING JAYA: The body of tahfiz student Mohamad Thaqif Amin Mohd Ghaddafi, who had both his legs amputated and died following alleged abuse at a religious school, was exhumed by the authorities for further investigations.
The grave of Mohamad Thaqif, 11, who passed away on April 26, was dug up on Thursday afternoon, Berita Harian reported.
The boy's aunt, Dzuraidah Ahmad, said the exhuming process started at around 3pm at the Felda Bukit Aping Muslim Cemetery, Kota Tinggi, Johor, where he was buried.
"It is true that Thaqif's grave was dug up in the presence of several family members to allow for samples from the deceased's leg to be taken for further investigations," she told the Malay daily.
Dzuraidah said officials from the hospital, police and court were also present at the grave during the process.
Kota Tinggi district police chief Superintendant Ashmon Bajah later confirmed that the process did take place on Thursday.
"The process is allowed by the court under Section 335 of the Criminal Procedure Code for the purpose of further investigations in the case," he said.
Mohamad Thaqif was allegedly beaten with a rubber water hose by an assistant warden in a private religious school for being noisy in a mosque.
The boy, who had both his legs amputated on April 22 due to the injuries, passed away at Hospital Sultan Ismail.
Mohamad Thaqif was initially scheduled to undergo a surgery to amputate his necrotic right arm due to bacterial infection, but the procedure was postponed.
The decision to amputate his arm was made after it turned black due to damaged tissues and blood cells, with no signs of improvement shown on the affected limb.
He had also fallen into a coma following the amputation of both his legs.
