SHAH ALAM: PKR youth wing will propose to the party leadership and Pakatan Harapan to name jailed opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as the coalition's candidate for prime minister.
PKR youth leader Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said Anwar, who is also the party's de facto leader, possessed the strength in leadership and received the trust of the rakyat.
He added that Anwar has the required experience under his belt, especially during his successful tenure as the country's Finance Minister during the premiership of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
"Therefore, without a doubt, the wing will propose to the party and Pakatan Harapan to name Anwar as our prime minister candidate in the next general election," he said.
"His success in building a mass movement, big tent politics crossing ideologies as well as communicating with the rakyat, is unbeatable," he said in his policy speech at the PKR youth National Congress at IDCC today.
Anwar is currently serving a five-year prison sentence since 2015 after he was convicted of sodomy by the Federal Court, a conviction that the opposition had alleged to be engineered by the ruling government.
He would also be refrained from being officially involved in political activies for a set period of time upon his release.
Pakatan Harapan, consisting of four major opposition parties including PKR, has yet to decide on their candidate for prime minister following a vacuum in the position after Anwar was jailed.
Later when asked in a press conference whether he was positive that Anwar's candidancy would be supported by other parties, he said "Insyaallah" (God willing).
"We will be discussing this together. This will be a motion from the wing," he said.
