Lebuh Victoria converted to one-way street

GEORGE TOWN: Traffic conditions are expected to see some improvement around Lebuh Victoria and the surrounding areas after the road is converted into a one-way street.
The changes came into effect on yesterday night according to Penang Island City Council councillor Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik.
The Council Infrastructure and Traffic Committee alternate chairman said making Lebuh Victoria into a one-way street was to facilitate traffic flow as a single flow lane could better accommodate vehicular movement.
He said having the road becoming one-way was also more logical and in line with the traffic flow of nearby Lebuh Pantai, another major road in the area.
Muhammad Bakhtiar said drivers will not be allowed to turn right into Jalan Pengkalan Weld from Lebuh Victoria under the change to reduce the possibility of accidents.
“This reduces the number of ‘conflict points’ at the stretch of road,” he said when contacted recently on the change.
Other roads adjacent to Lebuh Victoria affected by the change includes Gat Lebuh Armenian, Gat Lebuh Acheh, Gat Lebuh Melayu and Gat Lebuh Chulia.
Muhamaad Bakhtiar said the Council has obtained feedback and agreement from the residents and the two assemblymen of the affected places.
He said the Council will be monitoring the effectiveness of the changes for three months before deciding whether to make the changes permanent.
“The Engineering Department and Enforcement Department will be monitoring the situation,” he added.
