SHAH ALAM: PKR president Datuk Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail should take charge as the interim prime minister while waiting for the release of jailed Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in the event of opposition's victory in the 14th General Election.
In stating this, PKR youth leader Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad (pix) said Wan Azizah had proven herself as an effective leader by leading the opposition coalition through tumultuous times.
Nik Nazmi said this following his earlier policy speech this morning where he had suggested for Anwar, who is also the PKR de facto leader, to be named as the opposition's prime minister candidate.
"However, in the transitional period (after opposition's victory), who will be our leader while we wait for the release of Anwar?
"Wan Azizah has proven herself as an opposition leader, by playing a role in the formation of Pakatan Harapan when Pakatan Rakyat disintegrated," he said.
"I don't think there is a problem to place Wan Azizah as our transitional prime minister. She will also become the first female prime minister in Malaysia," he said in his winding up speech at PKR youth National Congress at IDCC today.
Anwar is currently serving a five-year prison sentence since 2015 after he was convicted of sodomy by the Federal Court, a conviction that the opposition alleges to have been engineered by the ruling government.
He would also be refrained from being officially involved in political activies for a set period of time upon his release.
Pakatan Harapan, consisting of four major opposition parties including PKR, has yet to decide on their candidate for prime minister following a vacuum in the position after Anwar was jailed.
Nik Nazmi said he had been asked on Twitter on how would Anwar be released to serve as the prime minister if the opposition came to power.
He added the oppositioin must work hard from today, as only the victory of Pakatan Harapan could guarantee the release of Anwar.
