PETALING JAYA: The Construction Industry Development Board of Malaysia (CIDB) has taken legal action against the main contractor of KL Eco City development project in Bangsar for failing to ensure safety following the collapse of a link bridge that caused the death of a construction worker and injury to five others in November, last year.
In a statement, today, CIDB chief prosecuting officer Abdul Razak Husin said findings by the board revealed that the contractor has failed to adhere to construction site safety requirements under CIDB’s Act 520 (Amendment 2011).
As such the contractor, Tuck Sin Engineering & Construction Sdn Bhd was charged at the Kuala Lumpur Session Court earlier today under the Malaysian Construction Industry Development Board Act Section 34B(1)(C).
“This is the main reason we have taken legal action against the contractor. However, the contractor has called for hearing and the case will be up for mention on May 31,” he said.
If found guilty, Tuck Sin Engineering & Construction which is the main contractor of the project could be fined not more than RM500,000 or face a jail sentence of not more than two years, or both.
A half-completed 70m long pedestrian bridge that was supposed to connect the KL Eco City development by SP Setia to The Gardens shopping mall in Mid Valley City collapsed on Nov 29.
The 3.30pm incident left a 21-year old Vietnamese labourer dead while five of his colleagues were also injured.
