Corruption case: Police corporal, civilian remanded for six more days

PUTRAJAYA: A police corporal and a van driver are being remanded for six more days to assist in the investigation into a corruption case of collecting bribes from operators of illegal gambling centres and massage parlours in Malacca.
Magistrate Nik Isfahanie Tasnim Wan Ab Rahman issued the extended remand order to enable the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to conduct further investigation into the case.
The 52-year-old police corporal who is attached to D7 (Secret Societies, Gambling and Vice division), Malacca state police contingent headquarters, was the 10th individual arrested in connection with the case.
The MACC had reportedly seized RM800,000 in cash from the storeroom of his house at the police quarters of the contingent headquarters at 2.15pm on Wednesday.
The van driver, 32, is believed to be the intermediary for the collection of protection money.
It is learnt that the suspect's bank account had been used to keep the protection money paid by the illegal gambling centre and massage parlour operators before being disbursed to the others.
To date, 12 individuals including two district police chiefs in Malacca and five other police personnel are being remanded to facilitate the investigation under Section 16(a)(B) and Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009 and Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.
Yesterday, a police officer with the rank of DSP in the Malacca Tengah district was ordered to be remanded for seven days to assist in the investigation into the same case. — Bernama
