Crime rate down last year: Report

PETALING JAYA: There was a notable reduction in the crime rate last year, according to the National Transformation Programme (NTP) Annual Report 2016 released today.
According to the report, the rate saw an annual decrease of 9% annually between 2010-2016.
In 2009, there a total 209,817 number of cases recorded while last year, it dropped to a total 112,354 cases.
"The Perception of Crime Indicator (PCI) introduced last year recorded a reduction the number of people in Kuala Lumpur who feared falling victim to a criminal act, indicating that the rakyat were beginning to feel safer," said Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak.
The total number of respondents in the Kuala Lumpur's survey also increased to 14,393, which is 3.4 times more from 4,200 in 2015.
Among the efforts taken to further reduce the crime rate was the implementation of 10 initiatives at the KL police contingent and 24 police stations within the contingent's jurisdiction.
These include migrating handwritten POL40 (station diary) and POL41 (police report book) forms to the electronic format.
This enables auto-filing of identification details when a complainant's National Registration Card (NRIC) is inserted into the Police Reporting System (PRS).
The modern policing also encourages effective patrolling, allowing the police force to create a more omnipresence to enhance public confidence.
Ongoing efforts to continue the crackdown on crime include the deployment of 11,500 policemen for on-the-ground tasks.
On Sunday, police also launched two new portals which allows city folk to make non-criminal related police reports online and another system to check the status of police reports made nationwide.
Kuala Lumpur Police chief Commissioner Datuk Amar Singh said the E-Reporting System and Online Checks System (SSO) are portals which will make it easier for those making police reports and want to know the status of their reports.
He said with the E-Reporting those who had lost their identity cards or passports could now lodge their reports online.

Meanwhile, on raising standards of integrity, Malaysia's ranking in Transparency International's Corruption Perception Index (CPI) stood at 55th out of 176 countries.
Najib said over 96.6% of cases highlighted in the Auditor General's Report 2014 Series 1-3 were successfully dealt with and resolved within a year of being tabled in Parliament.
Some 74.4% of corruption cases have been disposed of within a year of being registered in court.
The establishment of 14 special corruption courts has allowed the Malaysian judiciary to hear and adjudicate on the cases in a shorter time frame.
