ALOR STAR: The government will set up 20 more MyFarm Outlets nationwide this year to tackle the high cost of living faced by the people.
Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama) director-general Datuk Ahmad Ishak said this was due to the overwhelming public response.
"We have set up 11 MyFarm Outlets, among others, in Precinct 7, Putrajaya; Seri Manjung, Perak; and the Rural Transformation Centre (RTC) in Kelantan. We will add 20 such outlets this year due to the good response from the consumers.
"This is because the consumers can buy fresh items straight from the MyFarm Outlets at a reasonable price," he said after launching the Pre-Ramadan My Best Buy programme at the community and caravan community market (Pakar) in Kuala Kedah today.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak, when tabling the recalibration of the 2016 Budget on Jan 28, announced the launching of MyFarm Outlets nationwide as a platform for consumers to buy daily essentials at cheaper prices.
Open daily from 10am to 10pm, the MyFarm Outlet markets seven types of products, namely poultry, fish, meat, vegetables, fruits, agro-industrial products and frozen foodstuff.
Participants of the special farmers' market comprise agencies under the Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Ministry, namely Fama, National Fishermen's Association (Nekmat), National Farmers' Association (Nafas) and Padi Beras Nasional Berhad (Bernas).
Meanwhile, Ahmad said Fama had imported two million coconuts from Indonesia for the upcoming fasting month of Ramadan.
"We have imported a million of coconuts from Indonesia every month for the local market consumption but for this Ramadan, we have prepared with the additional supply of up to two million coconuts due to the high demand.
"There is no problem with the supply at the moment but it is not enough, (thus) Fama will import more and we are ready to make delivery to areas facing supply shortage," he said, adding the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry had set the ceiling price at RM1.90 per coconut. — Bernama
