'Geng Pam' leader killed in shootout with police (Updated)

TAPAH: Police yesterday shot dead a man who specialises in stealing pumps from heavy machinery in a shootout at Jalan Ayer Kuning-Kampung Gajah here yesterday.
He was high on the wanted list as part of a gang known as "Geng Pam"which had stolen pumps from the machinery.
The man in is 40s has seven previous criminal records, including four for robberies, one murder case and one theft of vehicle between 2006 and 2013.
Police formed a special team to nab the gang members after the pumps worth millions were dismantled from heavy machinery in 2016 and this year.
An operation codenamed "Ops Pam" was launched to arrest the gang members.
"The deceased has been held at the Simpang Renggam detention centre twice," Perak police chief Datuk Hasnan Hassan told reporters at the scene of the incident.
"He was a member of Geng 04 and he is the head of Geng Pam in Perak and we are tracking down five to six of the gang members", he added.
In the 3.30pm incident, a police team on patrol rounds spotted a car in Ayer Kuning here and ordered the driver to stop.
"However the car sped off with the police team in pursuit in a 4km chase.
"The car skidded and crashed into a culvert along the road.
"As police personnel approached the car, the driver alighted and fired three shots at the team, forcing policemen to return fire. Two shots hit the man who died at the scene," he added.
Three parang believed to have been used for robberies were recovered in the car reported stolen in Kuala Lumpur.
A pistol with a live bullet and three spent shells were also found.
The car was also fixed with a false number plate.
Investigations revealed the deceased was involved in seven heavy machinery robberies in Muallim, Tapah, Ayer Tawar and Manjung with pumps stolen worth RM500,000.
Hasnan said the man is also linked with gangs in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.
