ALOR STAR: The Kedah government today provided about 1,000 water tanks with a capacity of 900 litres to residents who faced frequent water disruptions in the state.
State Housing and Local Government, Water Resources, Water Supply and Energy Committee chairman Datuk Badrol Hisham Hashim said the approach was also taken to minimise the effects of water disruption during Ramadan and Hari Raya season.
He said the tanks would be handed to the State Legislative Assembly office before being distributed to the residents.
"It is up to the state assemblyman's office to identify those who really deserve to get the tanks to alleviate the people's burden; this was the promise we made during a meeting with the Mentri Besar to resolve the water problem faced by the people," he told reporters after the handing over of the tanks to Barisan Nasional state assemblymen in Wisma Darulaman here today.
He said each State Assembly office received between 50 and 150 tanks, depending on the area, with the total allocation amounting to about RM200,000.
Constituencies including Kuala Nerang, Pedu, Belantik, Jeneri, Bukit Pinang, Derga, Pengakalan Kundur and Kubang Rotan received 50 tanks each, while Pantai Merdeka, Bayu received 100 each, and Sungai Tiang 150.
Badrol Hisham said the Federal Government had approved about RM600 million to improve five water treatment plants in the state.
These are the Pelubang water treatment plant in Jitra, Lubuk Buntar Lama plant in Bandar Baru, Jenun Baru plant in Pendang, Bukit Selambau plant in Merbok and Sungai Limau plant in Baling. — Bernama
