PETALING JAYA: The saleswoman who claimed trial for dangerous and reckless driving which claimed the lives of eight cyclists on Feb 18 has turned to crowd-funding to raise money for her legal fees.
Sam Ke Ting, 22, voiced out her plight and requested the public to help her foot the bill for her upcoming trial.
Stating that resorting to the public was her last resort in a Facebook post today, Sam said she needs around RM60,000 for her legal fees.
"Considering the case has become complicated ..., I've (initially) declined offers from several parties and even the public's help.
"But as the pre-trial and hearing begin, the legal fees have exceeded my budget. My family is now short of funds to defend my case in court," she said in her posting.
In asking the public for donations, Sam included two bank account numbers.
On March 28, Sam was charged for dangerous and reckless driving under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which claimed the lives of eight cyclists on Feb 18.
The eight teenagers were killed on Feb 18 when a car driven by Sam ploughed into a group of cyclists in Jalan Lingkaran Dalam, Johor Baru about 3am.
The group of 30 to 40 teenagers on bicycles, aged 13 to 17 years old, were believed to have obstructed Jalan Lingkaran Dalam and other nearby roads before being mowed down by the car.
