PENANG Welfare Department officers were shocked to find a beggar who had RM8,000 cash on her. According to a report in China Press, she also had RM40,000 in fixed deposit and a house in the centre of Georgetown during an operation on May 24.
"The officers said the beggar had no family members nor relatives, so she resorted to begging on the street," the Chinese daily quoted State Health, Welfare, Caring Society and Environment chairman Phee Boon Poh as saying.
"Their collection can easily reach RM400 per day and they get free meals. Besides, they also have free access to bathing, battery-charging and resting place."
