UNIQLO is currently selling all 25 winning designs from its Nintendo-themed UNIQLO T-shirt (UT) Grand Prix 2017 design contest.
The contest attracted a record 16,000 entries. UNIQLO inaugurated this design competition in 2015 to foster creativity and talent around the world, making it open to anyone regardless of age, gender, or nationality.
The contest invited people to create original T-shirt designs inspired by Nintendo's timeless characters, including those from Super Mario Bros, The Legend of Zelda, the Donkey Kong series, and other games. Designs were also permitted to feature characters from such titles as Animal Crossing, Star Fox, Pikmin, Metroid, Kirby, and Splatoon as well as the world-famous Pokemon. The winning designs featured a Mario motif. In second and third place were designs on Splatoon and Zelda themes.
"I was extremely surprised and pleased to receive such a prestigious award for my creation featuring one of Japan's most renowned characters, Mario, as a motif. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to you all, including my family who supported me throughout. Thank you!" said grand prize winner, Takashi Kawazoe of Japan.
"As someone who is trying to become a creator, I couldn't be happier. I want to take away this experience and joyful feeling and reflect it in my future activities. Thank you very much!" said second prize winner, Shino Yamazaki of Japan.
"As the first Mexican to win a prize, I feel extremely honoured. I would like to express my gratitude to UNIQLO and Nintendo for giving me the opportunity to participate.
"I have been a fan of the games created by Mr Miyamoto ever since I was a small child. Many years later, my creation featuring Zelda has been selected to be used on a UNIQLO T-shirt produced in collaboration with Nintendo.
"I feel as if my dream has come true. To the team of Nintendo, thank you for letting me be part of your world!" said third prize winner, David Ricardo Flores Gomez of Mexico.
