Role model

JANICE Lim is the perfect example of an Edinburgh Business School student.
As a manager, wife, and mother-of-three, she's combining her Master of Business Administration (MBA) studies with work and family responsibilities.
Janice, head of department at APAC Finance Shared Services – Experian Asia Pacific, is a qualified Chartered Accountant who began her studies in January 2017, joining 21 students on the latest MBA programme at Heriot-Watt University's Putrajaya campus.
"My main objective in taking an MBA is to continue learning, equipping myself, refreshing and strengthening my skills. I'm already implementing my learning at work. For example, I'm taking economics this term and found it fascinating that I could explain, and get the buy-in from my employer, about what marginal productivity means in the workplace, and how the project will impact our direction," she said.
Senior Teaching Fellow Gerry Reilly teaches Economics and tries to make the seminars as interactive as possible, including running a business simulation:
"I thoroughly enjoy teaching in Kuala Lumpur as the atmosphere is always good and the students are very keen to learn.
"I use local case studies wherever possible, including a local lighthouse as an example of a public good, and Petronas as an example of a monopoly. I also provide a macro update on the Malaysian economy from the latest statistics," he said.
Janice feels her MBA studies are beneficial at work and home:
"By studying, I'm a good role model for children, showing them that age should not stop you learning. They are very proud of me. At work, as a leader, I'm a good example to my staff. Knowledge doesn't stop at your job title. A leader needs to continue to learn, explore and be adventurous," she added.
The Edinburgh Business School MBA has been available in Malaysia since 1992 through independent study or academic partners and boasts more than 1,200 Malaysian graduates.
This world-renowned MBA programme has also been delivered by top UK and Asian staff at the Heriot-Watt University Malaysia campus since January 2013. To date, 47 students have completed the programme with a further 98 currently studying the part-time programme which is delivered via weekend seminars so students can continue to earn while they learn.
The Edinburgh Business School MBA programme is approved by the MoHE, fully accredited by the MQA in Malaysia, and delivered by Heriot-Watt University, accredited by Royal Charter in the UK.
The students – all busy, working professionals – have chosen one of the most popular and flexible MBA programmes in the world which boasts more than 11,200 active students and 20,500 graduates in 166 countries worldwide.
"The Edinburgh Business School suited me best due to the location, what the syllabus offered and the study timeframe. These are key factors to consider when choosing a programme," says Janice.
Registration is open for the September 2017 intake and the School is holding a series of MBA preview events for prospective students. The first is on Thursday, July 20 at 6.30pm at the Hilton Sentral, Kuala Lumpur. For more information contact: MalaysiaMBA@ebs.hw.ac.uk
