BUTTERWORTH: Residents of Taman Senangin here are disappointed with the Penang government for failing to address the issue of floods in their area.
S. Karuppriah, 47, said the latest incident happened last Saturday night (May 27) during heavy rain.
"I woke up about 3am as my mattress was soaked. This is the worse flooding I have experienced after staying here for 39 years," he told theSun today after Penang Local Government, Traffic Management and Flood Mitigation Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow visited the area.
Another resident, Wong Tiew Hwa, 48, also expressed his frustration over the issue.
He said the flooding incident last Saturday was the second time this year flood water had entered his home.
"I really hope the state government can do something, they must do something," he added.
Earlier, Chow said the flood was due to an "abnormal and critical" amount of rainfall recorded at 137mm that day.
He said the high tide worsened the situation as rainwater was prevented from flowing into the sea by the incoming tide.
Chow refuted the suggestion the state was unconcerned over floods, adding several flood mitigation projects have been initiated which would take from one to three years to finish.
For Taman Senagin, he said the Seberang Perai Municipal Council will be upgrading the drainage system by deepening the current system to 1.2m as well as installing three new pumps to complement the existing five pumps.
He also denied the pumps at the area were not working but had malfunctioned due to being clogged by rubbish.
