Penang parking collection time standardised

GEORGE TOWN: Confusion over parking collection times in Penang Island will be over come July 1 as the collection time will be standardised beginning that day.
Penang Island City Council councillor Joseph Ng said users will have to pay from Monday to Saturday when parked on Council parking lots while parking would be free on Sunday.
He said collection time will be from 8am to 6pm but added users still had to pay for parking on public holidays unless the public holiday fell on a Sunday.
Ng said this was to avoid confusion for out-of-state motorists as users had to pay everyday except Sunday.
He said the Council conducted a two-month survey prior to decide on the matter and the feedback was positive.
He also said those surveyed were supportive of standardising parking collection times to avoid confusion.
"People are happy that the time will be standardise," the Council Finance Committee alternate chairman told theSun when contacted.
There are three parking collection times currently in force for motorists parking on Council parking lots on the island.
The three are red zones, where users have to pay everyday; green zones, where users pay Monday to Friday and free on Sunday and public holidays; and blue zones where users pay Monday to Saturday and free on Sunday and public holidays.
The separate zones with their different times introduced in 2014 have purportedly caused confusion among motorists and critics have told the Council to make collection times standard.
Until the coming scheme, all zones will be converted to yellow zones where parking collection times are standard.
