Penang govt to collaborate with three organisations to restore old market in Bukit Mertajam

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Penang state government will be working together with Seberang Perai Municipal Council (MPSP), Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Yokohama City University to restore and rejuvenate an old market in Bukit Mertajam here.
According to Penang Local Government, Traffic Management and Flood Mitigation exco Chow Kon Yeow, the state Planning Department will collaborate with the three organisations to restore the old market in Bukit Mertajam.
Chow said, up to this moment, the project is still in the research stage.
"With the afford of the state government and local communities here, I hope we can restore and rejuvenate the old market in Bukit Mertajam here.
"It is not bringing new development to the old market, we are also retaining the authenticity of the town," he told reporters after having a one-hour meeting with a community representative, Hock Teik Cheng Sin, at Jit Sin Independent School here today.
On Oct 25 last year, MPSP signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with three parties including JICA, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and Yokohama-Seberang Perai Urban Development Friendship Committee in Yokohama, Japan.
The MoU allows JICA to conduct a three-year study from 2016 until 2018, in Bukit Mertajam to assist in restoring and rejuvenating the township.
Also present were DAP Bukit Mertajam division chairman Chong Eng, its vice chairman Tan Chong Heng, DAP Penang organising secretary Wong Hon Wai, DAP Penang deputy organising secretary Lay Hock Peng, DAP Penang Wanita chief Lim Siew Khim, and two DAP Penang committee members Phee Boon Poh and Lim Hock Seng.
