100% increase in dengue case in Kedah

ALOR STAR: Kedah recorded a total of 712 dengue cases between January and June 3 this year, an increase of 100% from the 356 cases reported during the corresponding period last year.
State health director Datuk Dr Norhizan Ismail said the highest increase was reported in the Kuala Muda district, totalling 283 cases, from 135 last year, followed by Kulim (180 from 57), Kubang Pasu (47 from 16), Sik (31 from five), Langkawi (21 from 10), Padang Terap (16 from two), Bandar Baru (12 from nine), Baling (74 from 66) and Kota Star (35 from 34).
However, there was a drop in the number of dengue cases in the districts of Pendang (15 to eight) and Yan (seven to five), he said in a statement today.
He said there were nine localities in Kuala Muda (Taman Sri Tanjung, Taman Arked and Taman Ria Jaya Zon A), Padang Terap (Kampung Kubang Daksa and Kampung Banggol), Sik (Kampung Surau and Kampung Charuk Kit), Kubang Pasu (Kampung Changai) and Kulim (Taman Selasih) still active with the epidemic and the department was monitoring the situation.
Meanwhile, on chikungunya, Dr Norhizan said there were 171 cases reported between January and June 3 in the state this year with the highest cases reported in Kuala Muda (96), Baling (72) and one each in Kulim, Kubang Pasu, and Sik.
He said inspections had been conducted at 254,689 premises, where 4,950 of them were found to be breeding grounds for the Aedes mosquito.
Fogging had been conducted at 267,700 premises and abate had been placed at 50,079 premises to destroy Aedes mosquito larvae, he added. — Bernama
