Enhance security features at jewellery shop: Police

KUALA TERENGGANU: Jewellery shop owners have been urged to enhance security features at their premises to avoid from becoming an easy target for the thieves, said Terengganu police chief Datuk Aidi Ismail.
He said the lackadaisical attitude and lack of awareness on the matter had contributed to theft cases, especially at shops with no security devices at all such as the closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras.
"The criminals are also smart in taking advantage of the jewellery stores with flaws such as not having alarm system and CCTV. They are also targeting premises located at secluded area.
"It doesn't hurt to enhance security features including having security guards and bars to prevent the thieves from taking advantage (of the flaws)," he said after the pinning of rank ceremony to assistant superintendents, sergeants and the 2016 Excellent Service Award (APC) recipients for the state police contingent here today.
Meanwhile, Aidi also said police were now closing in on two individuals, aged in their 30s and 40s, believed to be involved in a theft case at a jewellery shop in Jalan Banggol last Sunday.
He said in the 9.30am incident, the owner had only realised that the items concerned were missing when preparing to start business for the day.
"The premises was not equipped with CCTV and we only have several leads based on statements taken from witnesses," he said, adding that police were yet to ascertain the estimated losses incurred. — Bernama
