Education Ministry sets June 23 as replacement holiday except for Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah, Johor

PUTRAJAYA: The Education Ministry has set June 23, a Friday as a replacement holiday for all states except Kedah, Johor, Kelantan and Terengganu in conjunction with the Aidilfitri festive break.
Its minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said all schools in Perlis, Penang, Perak, Selangor, Pahang Negri Sembilan, Malacca, Federal Territories (Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan), Sabah and Sarawak would need to replace the school day on June 17.
"The Education Ministry has agreed to give a replacement holiday to category B states on June 23 and it will be replaced on June 17," he told reporters after a breaking of fast with 1,000 Education Ministry staff here today.
Mahdzir said this in commenting on the statement by the West Malaysia Malay Teachers' Union (KGMMB) which requested the ministry to review the start of school holidays for the Aidilfitri celebration this year to reduce traffic congestion on the roads and to ensure the safety of teachers and students.
According to the original schedule issued by the ministry, schools in Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah and Johor will start their holidays on June 23 (Friday) while the holidays for other states will start on June 24.
The media had reported KGMMB president Datuk Mohd Sabri Mohd Arshad as saying traffic congestion was expected to peak on Saturday as Aidilfitri was expected to fall on June 25 (Sunday). — Bernama
