Uber driver in mugging case arrested

SHAH ALAM: Police have arrested a 31-year-old man believed to be the Uber driver who dropped off two college students in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur shortly before they were robbed by two men.
Selangor police chief Commissioner Datuk Seri Abdul Samah Mat said the suspect was arrested at about 12.45am on Tuesday in Kajang.
He added that police were on the hunt for two more suspects, believed to be the assailants on a motorbike who mugged and assaulted the two victims.
Abdul Samah was met after witnessing the handing over of duties ceremony by his deputy, Datuk Mohd Fuad Abd Latiff, to Datuk Ab Rashid Ab Wahab at the Selangor police contingent headquarters, here, today.
Fuad retires effective today after 39 years in the force.
Ab Rashid was previously the Perlis police chief.
The students, both 24, said they had booked a trip using the ride-sharing app from Jalan Ampang to Cheras Perdana around 3.30am on Sunday.
They claimed that the driver grabbed one of their mobile phones when they got into the car and changed the destination to Taman Murni Batu 9.
The students were then left by the roadside before the two men on a motorcycle pulled up.
They claimed that they were instead taken in turns to a secluded spot where they were beaten with helmets and mugged.
The incident was related by a Facebook user, Christine Juliana Danker, said to be the mother of one of the victims.
Meanwhile, Abdul Samah said police are investigating the woman who hit a girl mercilessly with what appeared to be cane in Puchong based on the release of the viral video.
"The child's mother passed away earlier in 2012, and the grandmother was taking care of the girl all the while. However, this is the first report regarding the abuse incident," he said adding that the video is not new and police believe was recorded much earlier.
In the video of the incident, a girl can be seen eating before a woman is heard asking the child to leave the dining table.
This happened when the child spilled some of her food on the floor.
As the girl stands up, the woman immediately starts beating her mercilessly.
