Only 120 taxi drivers registered for scheme under Socso

KUALA LUMPUR: Taxi drivers throughout the country should immediately join the Self-Employment Social Security Scheme to get coverage provided by Socso.
Socso Chief Executive Datuk Dr Mohammed Azman Aziz Mohammed said since it was enforced on June 1, only 120 of the 100,000 taxi drivers in the country had registered for the scheme.
"For the last eight days, the response has been less than encouraging because the registration for the scheme is only online and most taxi drivers who are self-employed do not know how to register online.
"However, we are going to the taxi drivers and taking steps to provide information and awareness on how to register and benefit from contributing to Socso," he told reporters at the Socso Breaking-of-Fast event 2017 held here today.
He said failure to register was an offence under the Self-Employment Social Security Act 2017 and if found guilty, could be fined up to RM10,000, jailed up to two years or both.
With the scheme, taxi drivers will receive medical, temporary disability, permanent disability, beneficiary, funeral arrangement and education loan benefits. — Bernama
