FOR its second year in a row, Sunway has worked with Kechara Soup Kitchen Society to launch their #ZeroFoodWastage. In the initiative turns surplus foods into meals for those who are in need and, in turn, reduce food wastage drastically.

The surplus food from buffets dinners and events served at Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa are given to Kechara Soup Kitchen Society and is used to help the homeless and urban poor in Malaysia.

The #ZeroFoodWastage initiative, which began last year, is the brainchild of Tengku Zatashah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

"I'm very much looking forward to the day when there are no more hungry people to feel. I'm delighted that Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa have chosen to champion #ZeroFoodWastage on a larger scale this year, as the initiative is being rolled out at all Sunway Hotels & Resorts throughout Malaysia," said Tengku Zatashah at the launch of this year's initiative.

According to Tan Seri Razman M Hashim, Deputy Executive Chairman of Sunway Group, he embraced the initiative out his dislike for food wastage.

"Many Malaysians are fortunate to have an abundance of food and may not give much thought to the 270,000 tonnes of food wasted every Ramadan. By Educating the public about food wastage, doing good deeds ad feeding the homeless and urban poor, Sunwayans are doing our bit to make small changes for a better and more sustainable future," he said in a press conference.

With this effort, Sunway Group has driven forward their endeavour to align their businesses with the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

Sunway volunteers will pack a total of 240,000 meals across Malaysia in conjunction with the nation's 60th Merdeka celebrations. 60,000 meals will be packed in Sunway City, Penang, Johor and Perak.

Sunway staff and volunteers will also work with Kechara Soup Kitchen Society to collect and distribute groceries to the urban poor.

"Eat to live, not live to eat," said Henry Ooi, President of Kechara Soup Kitchen Society. "With that in mind, let us educate our children, our loved ones, our friends, and re-educate ourselves not to waste food.

Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa in Sunway City was the first hotel within the Sunway Hotels & Resort division to run this programme in 2016. From May 27, Sunway Pyramid Hotel and Sunway Clio Hotel has also come on board.

This partnership will continue beyond Ramadan. Other Sunway Hotels will also come on board from July upon the completion of it's respective operational and food safety compliance.
