Former JKR engineer charged in court for corruption

JOHOR BARU: A former engineer with the Kulai district Public Works Department (PWD) was charged in the Johor Baru Sessions Court today with misusing his power in 2015.
Azizan Mohamed Yasin, 38, pleaded not guilty to using his position to appoint G Two Amiruddin Trading, a company that his elder brother Azizi Mohamed Yassin had a stake in, to carry out grass-cutting and cleaning work along certain roads in Kulai for RM19,750.
The accused who is now a senior assistant director (Consultation, Asset Management Division, Planning Branch) at Public Works Department (JKR) Headquarters faces Section 23(1) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009.
The charge on conviction carries a sentence of up to 20 years imprisonment and a fine of not less than five times the amount involved or RM10,000, whichever is higher.
Judge Mohd Fauzi Mohd Nasir set RM20,000 as bail with one surety and two other conditions. The accused must surrender his international passport to the court and report to Johor MACC Headquarters monthly.
The court also fixed July 31 for re-mention.
Deputy public prosecutor Khazrin Haffiz Khalil appeared for the prosecution while counsel Iskandar Shah Ibrahim represented the accused. — Bernama
