LABUAN: The Labuan Chamber of Malay Entrepreneurs (Duml) today channelled 'zakat' contribution to poor families in nine villages here in conjunction with Ramadan.
The contribution in the form of essential items such as cash, rice, and sugar were personally handed out to 40 families in Kg Sungai Miri, Kg Sungai Lada, Kg Sungai Buton, Kg Layang-Layangan, Kg Lubok Temiang, Kg Pohon Batu, Kg Gersik, Kg Saguking, and Kg Bukit Kuda.
"The presentation was made 'right at the doorstep' of the families after taking into consideration their state of health and their inability to come to any contribution programme," Duml president Datuk Seri Mohd Alias Abd Rahman told Bernama here today.
He said the contribution comprised 25% of last year's zakat paid to the Labuan Zakat Collection Centre by Duml entrepreneurs, adding that among the recipients was an elderly, former village head.
"It really feels good to do your bit for the less fortunate and bring smiles and joy at this time of Ramadan and the coming Hari Raya, and this is our obligation to be fulfilled," he said.
Mohd Alias said the chamber would also organise breaking of the fast (iftar) for 'tahfiz' students from three religious schools next week as part of its annual corporate social responsibility programme. — Bernama
