IPOH: A 52-year-old woman and a 12-year-old girl, believed to be members of a family, were burnt to death after a fire gutted their double-storey house in Taman Sinaran, Grik yesterday.
Grik district police chief Supt Ismail Che Isa said the identities of the deceased are not known yet.
Perak Fire and Rescue Department director Datuk Yahya Madis said the the department received a distress call at 3.33am.
"Eight firemen in one fire engine immediately rushed to the scene," he said, adding that the blaze had already destroyed 50% of the building by the time firemen arrived at the scene.
Yahya said the charred bodies were found in a room on the top floor of the premises.
According to Yahya, neighbours tried to break down the doors to rescue the occupants but could not do so due to the blaze and immediately alerted the department.
Yahya said the victims died after they were overcome by the smoke.
