Rohani expresses concern over rise in bullying following Nhaveen's death

GEORGE TOWN: Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim has expressed concern over the recent spate of bullying cases in schools and institutions of higher learning.
Rohani who paid a visit to the family of T.Nhaveen, 18, who succumbed to his injuries yesterday following a brutal assault by a group of teenagers, said his mother, D.Shanti had told her that her son's death should be the last of such cases.
The minister was speaking to the media after handing out cash assistance to Nhaveen's family at the Batu Gantong funeral parlour.
Rohani and family members were seen consoling a distraught Shanti at the wake.
She said Nhaveen came from a close-knit family and would call all his aunts "amma'.
Nhaveen, and a friend, T. Previin, 19, were buying burgers for supper during the 2am incident on June 2 at Jalan Kaki Bukit here.
Both were assaulted by a group of five youths after a bout of teasing escalated to a war of words.
Previin managed to escape the assault but Nhaveen did not when the attackers cornered him at a nearby field, he was also allegedly sodomised.
Police have detained five youths, including two still in secondary school, to assist in investigations
Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar has since said the case will be reclassified to murder from rioting following Nhaveen's death.
