SPAD suspends company of lorry in road crash that claimed 8 lives

REMBAU: The Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) has suspended the licence of the company that owned the lorry involved in the accident at KM25 Jalan Bahau-Keratong, which claimed eight lives.
SPAD senior general manager (Enforcement) Datuk Che Hasni Che Ahmad said the suspension applied to all 114 cargo trucks operated by the company which is based in Pahang.
"The suspension is effective from Monday till SPAD completes its investigation. The company must also comply with safety conditions that have been set," he said after an 'Ops Serkap' operation at Hentian Sebelah Pedas-Linggi near here last night.
In the incident involving four vehicles on Sunday, eight people from two families lost their lives while a child sustained injuries.
It was believed that the trailer truck had attempted to overtake a vehicle. The driver who escaped unharmed is expected to be charged at the Jelebu Magistrate's Court today, according to Che Hasni.
Meanwhile, he said the Ops Serkap which began at 8.30pm and ended at 11.30pm was conducted by 11 officers and 93 personnel from SPAD, Police, Road Transport Department (JPJ), National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK), Environment Department, Road Safety Department and Plus.
He said SPAD intercepted nine cases involving lorries including overloading, driving without permit and speeding, and a bus which could not produce its list of passengers.
The operation since Monday in conjunction with the Aidilfitri celebration would continue till July 2, he said.
He said JPJ intercepted 22 cases of various traffic offences while the police, five cases of speeding, and AADK, two cases of lorry drivers who tested positive for syabu and cannabis. — Bernama
