KUALA LUMPUR: Police shot dead two armed locals in two separate locations in the city early today morning.
The drama unfolded at about 3.30am at a construction site near Bandar Baru Sentul when the city police team from the serious crimes division (D9) was conducting "Ops Rantau" in the vicinity.
City Deputy police chief DCP Datuk Mazlan Lazim (pix) said in the 3.30am incident, as the D9 team was conducting their anti-crime patrol rounds, they saw two cars driving around the vicinity in a suspicious manner.
"The police waited near a traffic light junction near Masjid Bandar Baru Sentul. Once the suspect approached the junction, they realised our presence and escaped.
"Each suspect were driving their own car and they went separate ways once they saw the police. We had trailed both of them," he said at the scene.
Mazlan said one of the suspect even crashed into a police's patrol car in his bid to escape.
Moments later, policemen at the scene heard shots being fired from the suspect's car and police then opened fire in self-defence and killed one of them.
The remaining suspect meanwhile was cornered at Jalan Segambut but he was adamant and also opened fire in his bid to escape.
"The suspects' action forced the police to return fire," Mazlan said, adding that the suspects both 26, and 46 were killed instantly.
The detectives also recovered three machetes, cable cutter, two pistols, some live bullets and bullet shells from the scene.
"From our investigations, we believe the suspects, one from Kuala Lumpur and the other from Penang, has previous criminal records and one of them was on the police wanted list," he said.
Police forensic team were seen looking over the scene and the bodies have been sent to Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) for a post-mortem.
