A more English type of kuih for Raya

SUNGAI BULOH, June 20 (Bernama) –Those wanting something a little different to serve this Hari Raya can opt for the floury delights from White Brick Oven.
The artisan bakery offers a number of pastries such as scones, croissants, tarts and pain au chocolat. It also offers artisanal breads like the Bratislava rye, Hungarian rye and Miche sourdough loaves.
The man behind the wholesome baked goods at White Brick Oven is Mustafa Abdullah @ Martin Prior. He operates the bakery with his wife Mardia Nasir from their home in Kampung Kubu Gajah, Sungai Buloh.
Mustafa came to Malaysia 18 years ago from southern England. He has no formal training in pastry and bread making but instead learned from his grandmother who first taught him the craft at age five.
He and his wife once owned a shop but after it was robbed, they decided to operate their business only from home, calling it the White Brick Oven Artisan Bakery and Café.
What is unique about the offerings at White Brick Oven is that only organic flour are used in the goods and Mustafa mills his own flour from wheat and grains.
He also makes his own 'levain' (substance used to produce fermentation in dough) instead of resorting to commercially-produced yeast, distinguishing his products from those offered at other local artisanal bakeries. There are also no additives or preservatives in his products.
He has indeed taken pains to ensure the nutritional content and quality of the organic flour used is preserved. Those looking to mass produce such goods may be turned off by the tedious work and low profits, but Mustafa perseveres as he truly cares about his craft.
Prices start from as low as RM3 for pastries. Breads and cakes are made to order for collection at the bakery. Orders can be placed by emailing Mustafa at baker@whitebrickoven.com or by calling 018-350 3068.
The café is only open on Sundays and serves a variety of soups, quiche, pastries and bread products like pretzels and bagels. However, it is closed during Ramadan and will only open again on July 2.
Those wishing to place orders for collection at the bakery can still do so before Thursday, June 22.
Those interested to know more can visit their website whitebrickoven.com or their Facebook page White Brick Oven Dot Com.
Some of their goods are also available at Madinah Café in Ampang, Aroma Gourmet in Seapark, Petaling Jaya and the organic store Justlife. — Bernama
