KUALA LUMPUR: A private college student was sentenced to 15 years in jail after he pleaded guilty to depositing a total of RM300 into the account of an Islamic State (IS) terrorist for the benefit of Muhammad Wanndy Mohamed Jedi.
High Court Judge Datuk Ab Karim Abd Rahman ordered Hasrianto Matan, 21, to serve his sentence from the date of arrest, July 17, 2016, which means the accused will only serve a five-year jail term.
The account belongs to another terrorist, Bukhori Che Noor, who was instructed by Wanndy to manage and collect money from members of a Telegram group named "black crow".
In delivering his decision, Ab Karim said the accused was aware of the account number.
"You were aware that what you were doing is for the purpose of encouraging or assisting the terrorist.
"The sentence should be a lesson to the public, especially youths," he said.
Hasrianto had earlier admitted to three alternative charges. He admitted to three counts of indirectly handling the property of Wanndy, by depositing RM100 on three occasions, into the account of Bukhori Che Noor for the benefit of Wanndy.
The three offences were committed at a bank in USJ Subang, between April 4, 2016 to June 5, 2016.
He was charged under Section 130Q(1) of the Penal Code, which caries a maximum 20-year jail term with a fine.
According to the facts of the case, Hasrianto had joined IS via the Telegram group "black crow" and had also communicated with Wanndy via Whatsapp.
Wanndy had created the "black crow" Telegram group for the purpose of spreading IS ideology and to get support from Malaysians for the terror group.
