SHAH ALAM: An ATM robbery went awry after three thieves failed to get away with the machine they were trying to steal.
In the incident that happened at 3.25am today, police were alerted when the alarm went off in a bank branch at Dataran Sunway, Kota Damansara.
"The thieves had tried to steal the ATM machine but were unable to do so and fled when the alarm went off," said Selangor Criminal Investigation Department chief SAC Fadzil Ahmat.
He said that the police patrol car then went in search for the suspects when they saw a suspicious looking car parked at the side of the road just 500m away from the bank branch.
"Inside were three men who were resting," he said.
When the police officers had done a routine check of the car, they found a cable, a big hammer and other tools believed to be used in the botched heist.
"Two Indian men and a Chinese man aged between 24 and 30 years old were arrested immediately," said Fadzil.
He also said that they did not get away with any money but that they had damaged the ATM machine.
Police are seeking a remand order for the three men and they will remain in police custody until it is granted.
