KUALA LUMPUR: Police have ensured that a thorough investigation will be carried out on eight policemen suspected of extortion.
Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Noor Rashid Ibrahim (pix) said that Bukit Aman’s Integrity and Standard Compliance Department (JIPS) is currently in the process of conducting an investigation into the matter.
The eight traffic policemen are from the Ampang Jaya district. An amount of RM18,000 was found under the desk of one of the police officers when the JIPS team raided their premises on Tuesday.
The JIPS team acted after a tip-off from the public who informed them that one of the suspects had allegedly tried to extort RM1, 500 from a foreign worker hours earlier but he could only come up with RM500.
“When the raid was conducted, eight policemen were in the room, but we are still identifying those involved,” he said at a handing over of duty ceremony in Bukit Aman here today.
When asked if the suspects had been suspended from duty, he said that they were still on duty until the investigation is complete.
“If there is any wrongdoing on their part, then we will take action,” he said.
