PUTRAJAYA: The road safety campaign held in conjunction with the Hari Raya season this year has successfully reduced accident rates by 11%, says Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.
"The first week of the campaign has been quite successful with this reduction compared to the first week of Hadi Raya, last year," he told reporters at the sidelines of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak's Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house in Seri Perdana here, today.
The road safety campaign this year is themed "Pandu cermat, sampai selamat" (Drive carefully and arrive safely) and was launched on June 15 at KL Sentral.
At present, authorities are conducting Ops Bersepadu and Ops Selamat from June 18 until July 2.
"The festive season is for all of us to be together with our families and have a happy reunion.
"Please drive with discipline, follow road safety guidelines and do not speed," he added.
The Automated Awareness Safety System (Awas) which was launched in mid-April is expected to help reduce accidents and fatalities during the Hari Raya celebrations.
Over 7,100 deaths due to road accidents were recorded last year, an increase from around 6,700 in 2015.
