Massive jam heading to Woodlands checkpoint on second day of Raya

JOHOR BARU: It took some commuters up to four hours to reach the Woodlands checkpoint on the second day of Aidilfitri.
As of noon, thousands of cars were seen crawling at a snail's pace at the two crossings into Singapore.
According to a statement from the Johor police media centre, thousands of vehicles heading to Singapore were struck at the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) complex in Johor Baru on Sunday due to the strict security check at the Woodlands checkpoint.
The statement on Sunday evening said that the jam was due to the strict checking at Woodlands checkpoint. Thousands of cars had queued up to Jalan Tebrau and the Eastern Disperse Link (EDL).
Some drivers said they took about four hours to reach the Woodlands checkpoint.
The traffic volume at the Johor Causeway, which is 1.06km long is estimated at 100,000 vehicles on a normal day. During the festive season the number is expected to triple in volume.
Meanwhile, 61 policemen led by 9 police officers from 14 police districts have been deployed in 'Op Cantas' on the first day of Aidilfitri.
The cops were seen patrolling at shopping malls, the famous Masjid Abu Bakar, jewelry shops, foreign currency exchange outlets and other public areas.
